If you shook everyone in the class hand you would shake 17 hands because if there are 18 students in the class you would have to minus yourself and would shake everyone's hand once which would mean you would shake 17 hands. And if you had a fence that had to be 12 feet long and needed to have a fence post on each side and in between each fence post is 2 ft. Then you would need 7 fence posts. You get this by doing how long it has to be/2+1.
